Project Title: Vector Portrait – Charles Burns
Client Name: Toronto Film School – Student Work
Brief: Based on the graphic artist and cartoonist Charles Burns as a subject, create a vector-based portrait with Adobe Illustrator. Capture the artistic style of Charles Burns by creating an ominous feeling portrait in a comic book style.
Roll and Skills: I developed the concept and created the illustration using Adobe Illustrator with a Comic book style, larger than life, dramatic, bold, foreboding, ominous. In the style of Charles Burns’ artwork, comic book style speaks to illustrations that capture the unexpected, the unimagined. A rule of thirds defines the layout. The subject is prominent with the facial focus located on the right of the composition. While the hat and suit define the top and bottom thirds. The use of Adobe Illustrator brushes achieve a comic book style Artistic Inking brushes provide details and outlining. The colour palette is reminiscent of Charles Burn’s artwork, the use of a combination of negative space and muted colours brings a feeling of darkness.
Results: Capturing the personality and style of Charles Burns, an ominous portrait in Comic Book style is created with brushes, shapes, dark line work, negative space, and muted colouring.
